Mexico has advanced 29 places in equality: Inmujeres

Carolina Gomez Mena

The newspaper La Jornada
Sunday, September 22, 2024, p. 9

Between the previous six-year term and the current one, Mexico has advanced 29 places in terms of equality, said Nadine Gasman, president of the National Institute for Women (Inmujeres), who explained that before the country was ranked 62 out of 146 nations and now it is ranked 33, according to the Global Gender Gap Index.

On the eve of the end of the current administration and the transformation of Inmujeres into a State Secretariat, Gasman highlighted that this government has made progress in closing inequality gaps and in the political participation of women with parity in everything.

He assured that these tasks are central part of the Fourth Transformation and explained that this has occurred through social programs.

Thanks to the programs and pensions of the Welfare System, more than 3.5 million women have been lifted out of poverty, and with programs such as Women Peacebuilders, more than 30,000 are part of networks that strengthen and repair the social fabric in their communities. In reproductive health, there has been a decrease of more than 30 percent in adolescent fertility and a 10 percent decrease in births to girls under 15 years of age.

Agrarian justice

In addition, the gender perspective was incorporated into policies, and this can be seen in actions such as our agrarian justice programs. There is now an institutional framework for those who work in the federal government and it has links with states and municipalities, with the Legislative and Judicial branches.

This has an impact on the lives of women and girls, and in turn on the national project proposed by the President.

What has not improved is in reducing the economic gap related to women’s participation in the formal market; we are at 48 percent and men at 78. This is a low percentage in Latin America. Countries like Peru have a share of around 60 percent.

One of the factors that limits women from entering the formal labor market is that They don’t have time because they spend 40 hours a week caring, so it’s very difficult to have a full-time job.that is why it is important to establish the national care system.

After indicating that she is leaving Inmujeres satisfied and happy and that the successor instance remains in excellent handshe said that a project is already underway orderly transition process.
