Minister Héctor Rodríguez explained that the deadline for starting classes was set for Monday, September 30, “but this does not deny the possibility of starting earlier as each school deems appropriate, if this contributes to the education and well-being of children and adolescents.”

Education Minister Héctor Rodríguez Castro denied that his ministry has established prohibitions or suspensions for the start of the 2024-2025 school year, before September 30, in private institutions.

“At no time has the start of the school year been denied in those schools that already had it scheduled,” Rodríguez wrote in a publication on social media on Saturday night, 22nd.

He explained that the deadline for classes to start was set for Monday, September 30, “but this does not negate the possibility of starting earlier, as each school deems appropriate, if this contributes to the education and well-being of children and adolescents.”

He also insisted that “no official is authorized to deny this possibility.”

According to the schedule established for this school year, primary education levels must begin classes before September 30. By mid-October, the incorporation of secondary and high school levels is expected, with the aim of achieving the necessary adjustments in public and private schools.

Minister Rodríguez also commented that there is a “bureaucratic inertia” that, he asserted, “will have to change. I ask the entire educational community to join in to transform what we must transform in favor of education, teachers and students in our country.”

The Venezuelan Federation of Teachers and unions have warned of the serious situation faced by teachers, due to low salaries that do not allow them to cover their basic needs or travel to schools every day. They have also pointed out the infrastructure problems in public institutions, the inoperability of the School Feeding Program (PAE) and the large number of children and adolescents, more than three million according to their calculations, who are outside the educational system for this school year 2024-2025.

In response, the minister himself announced a plan for medical care, provision of uniforms, housing support, training scholarships and special loans that will begin on Monday 23rd. “We have reached several agreements with institutions and public banks to guarantee this care; with the commitment to continue improving the living conditions of our teachers,” said Rodríguez.

He said that in each school, teachers will report their priorities and with the support of the board, assistance will be organized. “This collaborative approach will ensure that the measures respond to the real needs of educators.”
