Antonio Gershenson*: Farewell, fellow President!

TO

over several For decades we have followed the political career of Andrés Manuel, citizen and constitutional president of the United Mexican States. Mentioning his names without the already famous surnames is a message of affection, respect and sincerity.

The recognition of the family figure who has won millions of followers is making history and, as the President himself has stated, he has done so together with thousands of people who have joined the movement for national renewal. Now, thanks to the progress of this national project, Mexico is changing and is recognized by both friends and strangers.

We are on a path towards reuniting with the Mexico that was hijacked by the millionaire business elite. They appropriated the natural resources and the possibilities of industrial development and, consequently, of economic development as well. The backwardness in all aspects of national life doubled and continued for more than 30 years of PRI governments and, among them, 12 years of shameful PAN rule.

If anyone has earned appreciation for the firmness and tenacity with which he has helped restore dignity and respect to our Mexican people, as well as national pride, it has been López Obrador, the only university political scientist to have reached the highest office in Mexico.

It doesn’t matter if it will take us several more years to consolidate the plans and reach the goals that we have set for decades and for which we have faced all kinds of situations. We are sure that the new generations will take up the baton. In fact, they are doing so.

As for our profession, as scientists and union activists, the work has doubled in recent years. We are left with an urgent task starting with the current administration. So far, very little progress has been made to ensure that the nuclear industry, for example, openly and without misinformation reintegrates into the projects for the sovereign rescue of our energy resources.

We remember our colleague Eliézer Morales Aragón when, from the Petroleum and Nation Forum (FPN), he pointed out the urgent decision to recover energy sovereignty, an action that we have shared since the beginning of the plundering of our hydrocarbons and other minerals.

The effort to contain the so-called energy reform was extraordinary. Various organizations, political parties, citizen and legislative groups, universities and the union of sectors such as the peasants, the teachers and others, joined together to defend our oil, a call made by AMLO and which unified important efforts of the union sector.

One of these efforts was, precisely, the FPN, whose tasks led us to an exhaustive analysis of each of the proposals of the energy reform. All possible points of view of its significance in the economic and political life of the country were addressed.

There was also a need to reflect, permanently and thoroughly, on the next steps that foreign and national companies affected by the suspension of the reform would take, how claims would be addressed and what responses would be provided.

And, taking advantage of the review of the energy sector that was generated with the rejection of the sale of our assets, the need to continue the tasks to correct the structural errors of the sector, Pemex and the CFE, among others, was raised, as well as to issue a more accurate diagnosis of what would come with the suspension of the reform, now with the political will in favor of the population.

At the end of this six-year term, we are approaching national sovereignty, which should not allow us to give up before consolidating it. The natural resources seized by illegal companies (illegal because of the leonine contracts that gave them the freedom to plunder) are practically already in our hands.

The laws are on our side, especially now that the judiciary will undergo a thorough restructuring that will not allow impunity for any company that invests in the future or for those that have become rich with the country’s natural resources.

We do not want to overlook the fact that, thanks to the supposed whim of President López Obrador, with the construction of the Mayan Train, the railroads are returning for the good of the population. For her part, Claudia Sheinbaum, future President of the Republic, has expressed her interest in continuing with the restoration of the railway system, which was destroyed by former President Zedillo.

With the reactivation of passenger trains and the expansion of freight networks, we will have a great advance in the communication of the country, from border to border and from coast to coast.

I wish President AMLO good health and the strength necessary to advance in his research work. We hope to be lucky enough to know the results of said work.

We sincerely acknowledge the decades of constant efforts to reclaim the country, to benefit the most needy population and to refresh our hopes.

And we are especially grateful for the perseverance that has kept it standing after 50 years of struggle and only six years of intense work to show that it can be done when there is political will.
