The Ecuadorian Presidency says it seeks to avoid “the misuse of public resources that are granted to citizens and that historically have not been properly justified and made transparent.”
The President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, He expressed his intention to promote a partial reform to the Constitution to eliminate public funding for political parties and campaigns in order to prevent public funds from going to “those who see political candidacy as a business.”
The president proposed reforming Articles 110 and 115 of the Ecuadorian Constitution, which allude to the fact that the State has the responsibility of financing the operation of political parties and movements, and the obligation to finance the dissemination of their electoral advertising.
“The Executive seeks to prevent the misuse of public resources that are granted to citizens and that historically have not been duly justified and made transparent,” said the Presidency of Ecuador in a statement posted on its official social media profile.
“These funds, which were previously allocated to those who only sought to take advantage of this allocation, can be allocated to other areas such as health, education, security, among others, addressing the real needs of citizens,” added the Ecuadorian authorities.
However, the Presidency has clarified that, in any case, this reform will not affect the next presidential elections in 2025. Noboa referred the chaos to the country’s Constitutional Court to study the procedure and rule on the matter before the matter is passed on to the National Assembly.
