José Manuel Albares, Spanish Foreign Minister, pointed out in an article that the welcome given to Edmundo González Urrutia goes beyond a one-off response and is “the expression of our ongoing commitment to the rights of the brotherly people of Venezuela.”
The Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albareshighlighted this Saturday, September 21, his country’s commitment to democracy in Venezuela.
“If there is a universal value worth defending, it would undoubtedly be democracy. That is the conviction of the Government of Spain and That is the only guide to all the decisions we have made. and the actions we have taken since the last elections in Venezuela,” he said.

In the article titled “Spain with the Venezuelan people” Published in the magazine “El Socialista”, the official referred to the decision to welcome Edmundo González Urrutia, opposition presidential candidate who requested political asylum after leaving the country on September 7.
“It is a decision that responds to a humanitarian and political need, but that goes beyond being a one-off response and is the expression of our ongoing commitment to the
rights of the brotherly people of Venezuela,” he argued.
He stressed that Spain has also contributed to the Venezuelan political process through the Agreement Barbados between the Government and the majority opposition in October 2023.
The foreign minister of Pedro Sánchez’s government discussed the steps taken by Spain in the last month and a half. These include the demand for the official minutes of the vote to be published, leading the response of the European Union (EU) and the signing of the Santo Domingo Declaration, with more than 20 countries in Latin America and Europe.
He recalled that Spain also promoted the debate on the situation in Venezuela at the informal Council of Foreign Ministers on 29 August.
“In the face of the cynicism of a Spanish right that only uses Venezuela to attack the Spanish Government, we stand firm in our convictions and our firm commitment to Venezuelans. In the face of their lies, we stand firm in our actions,” he said.
Likewise, José Manuel Albares emphasized that the destiny of Venezuela must be decided by Venezuelans in peace and freedom. “Only they, through dialogue, will choose their future, but in Spain they have and will always have a friendly country and a
brother people to accompany them on this path,” he said.
In the article, the foreign minister pointed out that, through Spanish Cooperation, the Government of his country supports Venezuelan migrants in countries such as Colombia. “This year, the Spanish Cooperation Agency has fulfilled the commitment made at the Donors Conference for Venezuela to dedicate 100 million euros to support the main refugee host countries.”
