More than 100,000 vehicles assembled from parts and pieces were registered in Cuba

AREQUIPA, Peru – The census of vehicles assembled from parts and pieces in Cuba concluded on August 22. Some 102,500 registrations were made throughout the country, with the highest numbers in the provinces of Holguín, Camagüey and Matanzas.

“Once the technical review process begins, no amendments to the registered data will be accepted,” clarified Rodríguez Dávila.

The minister also explained that work is being carried out on the internal organisation and preparation of the provincial MININT-MITRANS commissions, by specialists from the Directorate of Automotive Safety (DSA) and the company SITRANS.

The technical inspection is expected to begin in the main municipalities of each of the provinces, with all vehicles that are required to attend the technical inspection plants (somatón), that is, cars, rural cars, panel trucks, vans, among others.

Next, explained Rodríguez Dávila, mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and other similar vehicles will be inspected until all vehicles registered in the municipal district are checked. Then, the rest of the municipalities will be inspected until the province is complete.

He legalization process The first call for applications for these vehicles was launched in 2021. However, due to various difficulties faced by the owners in completing the procedure, MITRANS decided to launch a second and definitive call this year. The new call was aimed at those who were unable to legalize their vehicles in the first phase.

In addition, the process is open to vehicles that were declared unfit due to “fixable technical issues” and to those that did not pass homologation in 2021, as long as they have corrected the technical problems noted.

“This process is not only crucial for road safety, but also for improving the quality of transportation in Cuba,” Rodríguez Dávila concluded.

However, the second call has not been without difficultiesSince its launch, the website enabled for the process has faced technical problems due to the high traffic generated by an avalanche of requests.
