What is known about the Venezuelan-registered plane that landed at Cúcuta airport

A plane with a Venezuelan flag landed at Camilo Daza airport in Cúcuta in the morning hours of this Friday, September 20. The aircraft is a Cessna S-550 Citation S/II and it would have entered the country without authorization.

According to information obtained by EL TIEMPO, there are two pilots, a flight attendant, a major of the Venezuelan Army and a sergeant major of the Venezuelan Guard on board.

A source also confirmed to the media that the Colombian Air Force raised the alarm, since The plane would have violated aeronautical security protocols. Along the same lines, he established that the vehicle’s license plate is YV-3226, which about seven years ago would have transported deputies from the Venezuelan government to the United States.

President Gustavo Petro, for his part, said that the landing was apparently an emergency. “We are waiting for a report from the Civil Aeronautics, which is the competent authority for the case.”he added.

What happened?

Through a statement, the Civil Aeronautics indicated that, in accordance with the provisions of the Chicago Convention and the current Aeronautical Regulations of Colombia, “The aircraft YV3226 has the proper authorization from the Colombian civil aviation authority.”

The above considering that these agreements allow technical stops to be made in Colombian territory in emergency situations. This same regulation allows international aircraft to remain in the country for a period of up to 48 hours.

In this specific case, the entity indicated that the incident would have arisen from a confusion between tracks nearby. “The Venezuelan registered aircraft YV3226, in a condition of operational risk, landed on the runway of the Cúcuta airport when its intention was to land on the San Antonio runway, which has a similar orientation”explained the director of Aerocivil, Sergio Paris.

Paris also noted that the Chicago Convention requires assistance to aircraft in distress and in that regard “We at Aerocivil ask everyone to facilitate and assist in this situation, both occupants and crew, and allow the flight to continue.”

He also stressed that the necessary information was gathered to carry out, together with the Venezuelan authorities, the investigation processes relevant to this case.
