First football match between Brazil and Argentina completes 40 years

The first match between the two teams took place on September 20, 1914, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The friendly match preceded the Julio Roca Cup held a week later.

On the 20th, the players disembarked at the city’s port and were welcomed by Argentine fans and officials. Afterwards, the team was received at the residence of the former Argentine president, General Julio Roca, who was very ill and who gave his name to that year’s tournament.

As the Brazilian delegation arrived late, the Roca Cup game was postponed.

However, in the face of public expectations, the Brazilian and Albiceleste teams played a friendly match at the stadium of the Gimnasia y Esgrima Club in Buenos Aires. The hosts won 3-0.

A week later, this time for the Roca Cup, Brazil beat Argentina 1-0 in the same stadium. More than 17,000 fans watched the match.

Brazil’s line-up had Mendonça in goal; Nery and Píndaro in defense; Pernambuco, Lagreca and Egídio in midfield; Silveira, Millon, Friedenreich, Bartolomeu and Gomes in attack.

With the victory, the Brazilian team won its first trophy. The tournament was played 11 times between 1914 and 1976. Brazil won eight titles and Argentina won three editions.

According to the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA), the two teams have faced each other more than a hundred times in different competitions. As for the number of victories of each team throughout history, there is no consensus between the sports entities of the two countries and the international federation.
