Following the various forest fire events that occurred in the Junín region, the Natural Resources Department of the Junín Regional Government (GRJ) held a theoretical-practical workshop to establish prevention and action strategies in the face of emergencies, including all the sectors involved.

Among the attendees were agents of the volunteer fire department, army personnel, personnel from the National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), personnel from the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP) and other representatives.
Vladimir Yañez, manager of Natural Resources at GRJ, added that they are working on a regional ordinance that establishes sanctions and fines for those responsible for causing forest fires in the region.
During the talk, Luis Castro, representative of SERFOR, warned that forest fires will become more devastating as the years go by. “We are talking about the fact that by 2030 the number of fires will increase by 14%, this figure will continue to increase and by 2050 it will be 50%,” he said.

According to the report provided by José Vásquez, deputy manager of Civil Defense of the GRJ, the region has registered 3 homes directly affected, 1 fatal victim (80-year-old man) and more than 60 emergencies. “We registered 60 officially; however, there are many more that occur, but the mayors do not report them because they occur in very remote areas and the lack of logistics does not allow them to have the record of the emergency.
For its part, SERFOR added that in the last 8 years, 5 provinces of Junín were the most affected, including Jauja, Huancayo, Concepción, Yauli and Chupaca.
Among the main agreements are that GRJ will manage the declaration of a state of emergency for the affected areas; local, district and provincial governments will carry out awareness-raising activities in rural and native communities with the assistance of firefighters, among others. GRJ will present a proposal for a regional ordinance to sanction those responsible.
