At least 15 4×4 pick-up trucks that were purchased in July of last year and assigned to the Highway Police of South and North Lima, were found immobilized due to lack of scheduled preventive maintenance due to lack of payment, despite having the allocated budget, reported the Comptroller General.
According to the report, this fact was reported to the Minister of the Interior, Juan José Santiváñez, because it caused seven units of the fleet to be currently immobilized, “which could extend to the other units and affect the police response to robberies and/or assaults, traffic accidents and natural disasters.”
“The vehicles are part of the batch of 34 new, 4×4, double-cab pickup trucks, acquired in 2023 with an investment of more than S/ 8 million (S/ 6,681,000 vehicles and S/ 1,326,000 for maintenance). The units were distributed to the Lima Norte (11), Lima Centro (10), Lima Sur (10) Highway Protection Units and the Canine Support Department and Highway Protection Motorized Squadron (3). It should be noted that the value for each vehicle amounts to more than S/ 196 thousand.“, reads the Comptroller’s statement.
It was learned that the Mininter received a document urging it to take the necessary preventive and corrective measures, with the aim of ensuring the public purpose of the acquisition of 4×4 trucks for the Road Protection Division of the National Police of Peru.
“If this fact is not corrected and some units continue to circulate without maintenance, the warranty on the vehicles could be lost, as well as possibly presenting risks to the physical integrity of police officers and pedestrians.”, they add.
