Forest fires in Peru: Death toll rises to 18 and 150 injured

The death toll from the forest fires has risen to 18 and the number of injured has reached 150. Last Wednesday, the Minsa reported 15 deaths due to multiple burns and asphyxiation. However, the death toll has risen.

These new cases are three men between 77 and 80 years old, who died between August 23 and September 13.

The first is Lino Isuiaz Chujnadama (77), who died in a fire in San Martín on August 23. Also Manuel Sangama Cachique (80), who died on September 2 also in the San Martín region, Shamboyacu district. Finally, Eusebio Damian Inga (80), who lost his life on September 13 in a fire in the Concepción district, Junín department.

According to the latest Indeci records, as of Thursday there were 41 active forest fires, five more than the previous day. The regions with the most cases are Amazonas, Ancash and San Martín.

Indeci also points out that the most affected regions are Amazonas, Ancash, Arequipa, Cajamarca, Cusco, Lambayeque, Huánuco, Pasco, Piura, San Martín, Tumbes and Ucayali. The first two have the highest number of active fires: 7 and 4, respectively.

In addition, the COER Áncash indicates that 236 fires were recorded in this region in 2024, however, the data has not yet been processed by Sinpad.

In this regard, they announced that 1,495.33 hectares of crops have been lost nationwide and 2,257.96 hectares of natural cover have been destroyed.

The National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) of the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) reported that 170 forest fires in Peru are affecting 20 regions.
