Government would consider a differential VAT for hybrids

In the midst of the debate on the 2025 Budget,In addition to this, the Government was considering removing the 5% VAT benefit from hybrid vehicles and raising it to 19%.

However, this week in the midst of discussions with congressmen on the need to adjust official claims to the reality of the economy, The Ministry of Finance agreed to review the tax on hybrid vehicles and the head of the portfolio, Ricardo Bonilla, indicated that they would do so depending on the technology used. by machines.

In the Colombian market there is a wide range of hybrid vehicles, ranging from light hybrids, micro hybrids (mild hybrid) or MHEV, which In the Colombian case, they already have a great advantage and that is that they are engines with recent technology, which means their emissions are already minimal.

In addition, the ‘star stop’ technology when on or off allows you to save even more fuel and while in motion you receive another small contribution when the two technologies move the car. They benefit from the fact that these machines emit less than half of the emissions of the machines in the Colombian vehicle fleet, which are on average 20 years old.

This encourages people to become familiar with new technologies and reduces current emissions by more than 50%.

But in addition, Andemos recalls the document of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, called ‘Technical concept of hybrid vehicles’, from the year 2022, which says that vehicles “Hybrids are of great importance in the energy transition process (…), since they allow us to overcome the barriers presented by long distances and charging times in electric mobility.”

Furthermore, in that same document it was concluded that “It is considered that, as long as there is not a sufficiently robust charging network at a national level, and even if the batteries in their conception do not increase their energy density to a greater extent, hybrid electric vehicles (mild, complete and plug-in) are an excellent option in the face of the energy transition and the reduction of emissions.without forgetting that electric vehicles still have a high acquisition cost.”

Andemos adds that the aforementioned study indicated that the three types of hybrids studied (mild hybrids (MHEV), full hybrids (HEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV)) show reduced fuel consumption and emissions compared to conventional vehicles.

Finally, and in relation to the same document, “We must point out that the valuation of benefits that had been established, at more than US$1.15 billion, will not be achieved if hybrid sales are reduced and Colombia will lose an enormous path that had been laid out long ago.“the union said.

In the country there are plug-in hybrids that can travel 50 or 100 km in 100% electric mode, which meets the requirements for use in the city and can use combustion mode outside the urban perimeter, since there is no robust network of electric charging stations and it is not mandatory to have two cars.
