A survey conducted in 27 public and philanthropic hospitals in the country shows that, from January to August, hospitalizations caused by respiratory diseases increased by 27.6% compared to the same period last year. In terms of values, hospitalizations cost R$11 million more in 2024 than in the same period in 2023. The data is from Planisa, a hospital management company.
“The increase in hospital costs is significant, indicating a considerable economic impact for hospitals. The estimated value of R$11 million reflects the additional financial pressure that hospitals face due to the increase in hospitalizations and the increase in daily treatment costs,” highlighted Marcelo Carnielo, specialist in hospital cost management and Director of Services at Planisa.
According to the director, to manage the greater number of patients and the increase in operating costs, hospitals will have to invest in prevention strategies, such as encouraging vaccination against respiratory diseases and seasonal diseases whose increased incidence may be related to adverse weather conditions.
“[Os hospitais deverão] adapt planning to deal with seasonal peaks and extreme weather events, such as optimizing the allocation of beds, staff and other resources, as well as continually reviewing and updating hospital protocols and practices,” he added.
