Announces DR as host of Central American and Caribbean Convention of Arbitration Centers

The event will take place from October 16 to 18 at the Sheraton Santo Domingo Hotel, and will feature the participation of renowned arbitration specialists.

Santo Domingo.- This year, the city of Santo Domingo will host the Central American and Caribbean Convention of Arbitration Centers, which in its 14th edition will address the topic: “Trends in arbitration in the region and its growing use in new areas of law.”

The event will take place from October 16 to 18 at the Sheraton Santo Domingo Hoteland will feature four discussion panels dedicated to topics of great importance for the region, such as: efficiency in arbitration: available resources; the administrative body of the arbitration institution: role and mission; the current scenario regarding the issue of corruption; and arbitration in new areas of law.

Additionally, the convention program includes several simultaneous activities such as the launch of the first association of young people in arbitration, Dominican Very Young Arbitration Practitioners, and a workshop and conference of the international institutions International Bar Association and the Latin American Arbitration Association, respectively.

The convention, which brings together specialists in dispute resolution from all over Latin America, is organized by the Court of Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution of Santo Domingo (the Court), an independent body attached to the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Santo Domingo with the support of arbitration centers in Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

“During the three days of the event, participants will obtain tools that will allow them to develop strategies to resolve conflicts that may arise during a business relationship, effectively and efficiently, and will be able to update their knowledge on the latest trends in arbitration practice,” explained Ramón Ortega, President of the Court.

“This is an excellent opportunity for participants to hone their legal and practical skills to present cases persuasively, as well as to connect with other lawyers, arbitration specialists and directors of arbitration centers in Central America and the Caribbean, to create new job opportunities and collaborations,” added Eugenia Brache, Secretary General of the Court.

About the Santo Domingo Court of Arbitration

The Santo Domingo Court of Arbitration was created in accordance with Law 50-87 dated June 4, 1987 on Official Chambers of Commerce and Production of the Republic, amended by Law 181-09 dated July 6, 2009 and Law 36-23 dated June 23, 2023, which empowers the Chambers of Commerce of the country to create this type of organization.

Its purpose is to offer the national and international business community and investors a service for resolving their disputes with effectiveness, efficiency and impartiality.

The Santo Domingo Court of Arbitration is also committed to the development of alternative methods of dispute resolution in the Dominican Republic and has all the tools to respond to the needs of each arbitration, conciliation and mediation that it administers.

Promote the development of alternative dispute resolution methods in the Dominican Republic and Latin America.

Administer alternative dispute resolution processes, both national and international, in accordance with applicable regulations.
