Vice-President of the European Parliament condemns pressure against Edmundo González Urrutia

Esteban González Pons, vice president of the European Parliament, denounced the alleged blackmail suffered by the opposition member Edmundo González Urrutia at the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Caracas, demanding explanations from Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares. González Urrutia claims to have been coerced into signing a document recognizing the victory of Nicolás Maduro, while Jorge Rodríguez, president of the 2020 National Assembly, confirmed the authenticity of the document and gave González Urrutia a 24-hour deadline to retract his accusations.

The Vice President of the European Parliament, Esteban González Pons, criticized on Wednesday the actions that occurred at the residence of Ramón Santos Martínez, Spanish ambassador in Caracas, where presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia was allegedly coerced into signing a document recognizing the legitimacy of Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the July 28 elections.

González Pons stated on social media that President Pedro Sánchez’s ambassador “not only consented to blackmail in his residence, but also allowed photos to be taken to continue the blackmail afterwards.”

The vice president of the Popular Party of Spain also questioned the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, whom he demanded explanations for the alleged participation of Spanish officials in the pressure against the standard-bearer of the Democratic Unitary Platform.

«What do you know and you keep quiet? Where have you hidden? This is the politics of mobsters and criminals.»said the MEP in rejection of what happened in Caracas.

This message comes in response to a video spread on social media Gonzalez Urrutiain which he claims to have been a victim of «“blackmail and pressure” to sign the document, and that if he did not sign, he would have to face the consequences.

For his part, the president of the National Assembly 2020, Jorge Rodríguez, confirmed the veracity of the letter attributed to Edmundo González Urrutia, highlighting that it was signed before the opposition leader left Venezuela for Spain under the guise of asylum. During a speech, Rodríguez showed images of meetings between González Urrutia, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez and himself, suggesting that the opposition leader’s claims of coercion «They have no basis».

Rodríguez warned that if González Urrutia does not rectify his public statements in the next 24 hours, he will publish additional evidence.
