The elimination of the Colombian Women’s Under-20 Team from the World Cup, after the match against the Netherlands on September 15 at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium, unleashed a wave of reactions on social media.

In the quarter-final match, the ‘Tricolor’ failed to advance, which has generated both gratitude for the players’ efforts and criticism for the defeat.

Linda Caicedo, one of the team’s most prominent figures, used her social media to express her disappointment after the result. “I still can’t get over the result we had, because of the feeling and the great hope we had as a team to keep that beautiful cup at home. The defeat hurts,” she wrote, reflecting the group’s feelings.

In her message, she also thanked the fans who have supported women’s football and went against those who criticize without taking into account the team’s efforts. “Thank you to the people who really care about women’s football, who know the process and who do not judge or harm. Thank you, Colombia, for this incredible experience,” she added.

Controversial comments by comedian Piter Albeiro against Colombian players

Amidst the criticism of Colombia’s elimination, comedian Piter Albeiro joined in, becoming the centre of controversy for controversial comments on his X account. “That custom of ours of thanking for defeat,” he began his criticism, followed by messages such as: “Thank you, girls, it’s not like you don’t know how to kick a penalty… That’s why we don’t win titles. If you’re not going to make an effort, don’t go.”

The statements have polarized public opinion; many users supported his position, arguing that the tendency to “romanticize” defeats contributes to Colombia not winning important titles.

On the other hand, many defended the players, pointing out that Piter Albeiro’s comments were insensitive and inconsiderate. They argued that the team’s true merit lies in their effort and the achievements they have made so far, beyond the final result.
