Hidden among the green mountains of Cundinamarca, about 120 kilometers from Bogotá, lies the fascinating municipality of Gama. With a population of more than 4,000 people in its rural and urban areas, this small corner of Colombia not only stands out for its natural beauty and the kindness of its inhabitants, but also for being considered the most peaceful municipality in the department of Cundinamarca.

Gama, in addition to its serenity and scenic splendor, has a unique history that sets it apart. In a video by content creator Kevin Bolaños, a local resident shared a valuable fragment of the municipality’s history: Gama was an independent republic of ColombiaThis historical episode dates back to 1934, when the lack of investment and resources from the national government led the inhabitants to take a drastic measure to ensure the development of their community.
«This little book contains a great history of our municipality of Gama, the monograph. The monograph details that our municipality was an independent republic of Colombia and it was because the government of that time prohibited the commands that carried out works within the municipality, which was an obligation. However, the government prohibited them due to circumstances that it saw fit. Thus, our municipality, which did not receive resources from the nation and did not have its own resources either, was left with nothing… and it was decided to create an independent republic,» he explained.
Community elected its leaders
Catholicism, Union, Patriotism (CUP) was the name of this republic. The inhabitants elected their own president, vice president, and established various ministries, congresses and governors to manage their new state.
According to the story of the inhabitant of Gama, each person had to contribute a certain amount of money to carry out the works in their territory. The community came together to build schools, colleges, roads and other essential public works.
However, the departmental government did not look favourably on this form of organisation and transferred the leader of the process, Father García Araos. Despite its short duration, the legacy of this experience remains alive in the memory of the population, who remember this stage as a time of progress and cohesion in the history of their beloved municipality.
Today, Gama remains a quiet and peaceful place, where the history of its brief independence remains a proud reminder of the independent spirit and unity of its people.
