Catholic University of Murcia and UH will offer a double degree in Anthropology and Heritage

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Catholic University of Murcia, a private institution, will offer, together with the University of Havanaa double degree in Anthropology and Heritage that will be taught starting in January 2025 in the Cuban capital.

As summarized by the Murcia newspaper New Digital, Last week, Armando Rangel, director of the Montané Anthropological Museum (Cuba) and professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Havana, visited the Spanish university to “tie up the final details of the double degree in Anthropology and Heritage.”

There he met with María Dolores García, president of UCAM, and Antonio Alcaraz, vice-rector of University Extension of the Catholic University and academic director of some projects that the Murcian institution is developing in Cuba.

The degree will be taught jointly by both institutions, although no details were provided on the modality or the number of places to be offered.

According to the Spanish newspaper, the president of UCAM had already held meetings with Miriam Nicado, rector of the University of Havana, to outline the strategic lines of the agreement.

Previously, under another agreement, a Diploma in Anthropology and Heritagetaught by the San Gerónimo University College of Havana, the Montané Anthropological Museum and the Catholic University of Murcia.

The course was held between October 1, 2012 and February 28, 2013 and was aimed at professionals from the Office of the City Historian and other heritage sites, professors from the San Gerónimo University College of Havana, the University of Havana and other specialists involved in the management and preservation of heritage.

It consisted of nine modules, with a total of 30 academic credits and only 25 places were awarded.

UCAM, within the framework of the training project “The Cuban Currency: Youth Training Program”graduated 200 university technicians in Cooking and Gastronomy this year.

The program “La Moneda Cubana: Youth Training Program,” launched in 2008, lasts two years and is attended by young Cubans without work or prior professional training.

At the institution, students take training courses under the supervision of UCAM to specialize in Tourism, Hospitality, Gastronomy and Languages, and can access a higher university course in Economic and Financial Management and Marketing.

University of Havana declines

With only 13,471 students, UH’s reputation has been falling in recent years. The main educational center in Cuba It plummeted in almost all quality aspects evaluated in the QS World University Rankingswhile other universities made progress in the region.

Indoctrination, lack of funding and political repression continue to mark the fate of Cuba’s leading university, while the regime seeks assistance from other countries to save some indicators.

This 2024, the school is ranked 691 within the QS World University Rankingsa place considerably lower than the 467th in 2023.

In the Latin American region, UH is ranked 33rd. The ranking for this area is led by the University of Buenos Aires, the University of São Paulo, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (UC) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

The ranking evaluates aspects such as citation of academic articles by faculty, academic reputation, employment opportunities, international students enrolled at the university, international research networks, among others.
