Special edition of Global Magazine dedicated to the centenary of the departure of intervention troops is circulating

The 103rd edition of Global magazine has been in circulation since Monday, dedicated to commemorating the centenary of the withdrawal of American occupation troops in 1924.

The United States Marine Corps intervened in the country in 1916 and occupied it for eight years, until the so-called Hughes-Peynado Plan put an end to the presence of the American military in the national territory.

On July 12, the centenary of this episode in Dominican history was commemorated. On that date in 1924, the Dominican flag was raised again on the Tower of Homage, today the Fortress of Santo Domingo or Fortaleza Ozama, and the flag of the stars and stripes was lowered.

The Global magazine brings together a group of notable historians who analyze the event and its implications for the life of the country. Among the authors who collaborate in this edition are Frank Moya Pons, Juan Daniel Balcácer, Edwin Espinal, Wenceslao Vega Boyrie and the Puerto Rican historian specialized in Dominican history, Pedro L. San Miguel. Also, José Vásquez, Luisa Navarro, the writer Ylonka Nacidit-Perdomo and the economist and writer Eduardo García Michel. A testimonial text by the late historian Pedro Troncoso Sánchez is included, who was a young fifteen-year-old when the occupation troops left.

Covering different angles and assessments, these intellectuals offer a detailed view of this episode that offers readers the opportunity to learn more about the details of the occupation. This historic event is recorded in this commemorative edition, which is accompanied by a section of books on the subject and the publication of the Memorandum that put an end to this sad violation of national sovereignty.

Global is a quarterly publication of the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) directed by José Rafael Lantigua. Those interested in acquiring it can request it at the entity’s headquarters.
