The National Council of Justice (CNJ) authorized this Tuesday (17) the transfer of resources collected by the Judiciary with fines and financial penalties to combat fires throughout the country.
During today’s session, the CNJ also decided that judges from all over the country should give priority to the judgment of cases on the punishment of environmental infractions and precautionary measures for search, seizure and preventive arrests involving the subject.
The transfer of funds should be done in accordance with the model adopted by the Judiciary to assist the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul, the agency responsible for assisting those affected by the heavy rains that flooded part of the state in May of this year. Approximately R$198 million was transferred.
Yesterday (16), the president of the CNJ, minister Luís Roberto Barroso, demanded seriousness from the Judiciary in combating criminal fires in the country.
During a speech given at the opening of the meeting of the council’s Observatory of the Environment and Climate Change, Barroso said he had received a phone call from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who expressed concern about the impunity of those who carry out intentional burning.
