“Youth in Transit” launched to improve road safety

Santo Domingo;- In a joint effort to reduce traffic accidents and promote a culture of road responsibility, with the support of the Ministry of Education (Minerd), four institutions signed an agreement today to implement the “Youth in Transit” program, which will train responsible drivers and pedestrians, reduce accidents and improve mobility.

This public-private alliance, made up of Santo Domingo Motors, Motor Crédito, Entrena and the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant), will benefit in its first phase more than a thousand students from eight educational centers in the La Guáyiga community, Pedro Brand, with an investment of close to five million pesos.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the headquarters of Santo Domingo Motors by its president, Aníbal Rodríguez; the president of Motor Crédito, Benahuare Pichardo; the director of Entrena, Saschia Seibel; and the director of Intrant, Milton Morrison.

Also present at the event were the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Grupo Ambar, Miguel Barletta; the member of this board, Alexis Anselin; and the Commercial and After-Sales Director of Santo Domingo Motors, Marielly Figueroa, among other executives and officials.

A commitment to road safety education

The “Youth in Transit” project will focus on comprehensive road safety education, covering everything from raising awareness about the importance of safe behaviour to knowledge of traffic regulations and the development of practical skills.

It is expected that the young participants will acquire values, habits and attitudes that will allow them to make responsible decisions in traffic, whether as pedestrians, cyclists, passengers or future drivers.

Long-term impact

This initiative has the potential to generate a significant social impact by reducing traffic accidents and their consequences. It is expected to change road culture towards greater safety and respect, the development of more conscious and responsible citizens, and a positive economic impact by reducing the costs associated with accidents.

In addition, an improvement in urban mobility, the promotion of public health (by reducing accidents) and the strengthening of the social fabric are expected.

Each institution will play a crucial role in the success of the program. Santo Domingo Motors and Motor Crédito will provide the financial resources, Entrena will execute the program and the training activities, Minerd will guarantee access to educational centers and ensure that the content meets educational standards, and Intrant will supervise compliance with road safety regulations.

Scope and training

In its first phase, the project will begin with a thousand students from at least 8 educational centers in the La Guáyiga community, Pedro Brand, who will receive 40 hours of theoretical and practical training on topics such as traffic, pedestrians, traffic agents, vehicles, risk factors, road safety, traffic signs, traffic lights, traffic laws, drivers, violations and sanctions.

“Youth in Transit” represents an investment in the future of the Dominican Republic. By educating young people about road safety, a safer and more responsible society is built. The reduction of accidents will not only save lives, but will also have a positive impact on the economy, health and quality of life.

This agreement is an example of how public-private collaboration can generate solutions to social problems. It is hoped that “Youth in Transit” will inspire other initiatives and contribute to creating a safer future on Dominican roads.

The signing of this agreement marks the beginning of a path towards a more responsible road culture, where young people are agents of change.
