Spanish Consulate in Cuba to “clean up” appointment system for Grandchildren Law

Consulado, España, Cuba, citas, Ley de Nietos

MADRID, Spain.- The Consulate of Spain in Havana has issued a statement to remind that, in order to improve the appointment booking service related to Law 20/2022, on Democratic Memory (LMD), the system will delete all credentials received before January 1, 2024. This action will be carried out on October 1. Users who received their credentials before that date and who have not yet booked their appointment will have the opportunity to do so only during the month of September.

The consulate’s statement states: “In order to refine the appointment reservation system for Law 20/2022, of Democratic Memory, and to be able to offer a better service, the person responsible for the platform will proceed, on October 1, to delete all users who received their credentials (username and password) before January 1, 2024. Therefore, all users who received the credentials before that date and have not yet booked an appointment will only be able to do so with said credentials during this month of September.”

This measure is a consequence of the wave of protests on social media due to delays in the process.

The institution also clarified that the reservation operation must be made before October 1, but the appointment obtained may be for a later date. Users are requested to attend their appointment with the corresponding reservation receipt.

Last July, the Spanish Government confirmed the extension of the Democratic Memory Law, also known as the Law of Grandchildren. The Council of Ministers approved extending until October 2025 the Eighth Additional Provision of the LMD, allowing descendants of emigrants to access Spanish nationality. The application must be formalized within two years from the entry into force of the law, on October 21, 2022. As of December 2023, 226,354 descendants had requested nationality under this law, of which 110,540 were approved and 69,421 registrations made.
