l International Day The International Day of Democracy, which is being celebrated today, is an opportunity to reinforce the importance of defending freedom of expression, civil liberties and the rule of law, ensuring that institutions are accountable and protecting and promoting human rights.
This is especially critical in a year when more than 50 countries, representing half the world’s population, are holding elections.
Yet these rights and values are under attack all over the world. Freedoms are being undermined. Civic space is shrinking. Polarisation is intensifying. And mistrust is growing.
This year’s Democracy Day focuses on artificial intelligence as a tool for good governance.
If left unchecked, the dangers posed by artificial intelligence could have serious consequences for democracy, peace and stability. This may start with the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation, the spread of hate speech and the use of so-called deepfakes.
However, artificial intelligence has the potential to promote and enhance full and active public participation, equality, security and human development. It can boost education about democratic processes and shape more inclusive civic spaces where citizens have a voice in decisions and can hold those who make them accountable.
To take advantage of these opportunities, it is essential to ensure effective governance of artificial intelligence at all levels, including at the international level.
The high-level advisory body on artificial intelligence, whose membership is inclusive and geographically diverse, has published a report with recommendations on how to harness the benefits of artificial intelligence while mitigating the risks.
The message is clear: artificial intelligence must serve humanity in an equitable and safe manner.
This month’s Future Summit offers a vital opportunity to strengthen international cooperation, build trust and safeguard current and future generations.
On this International Day of Democracy, let us continue working to build a more inclusive, fair and equal world.
