Gonsalves: Guyana benefits from Maduro as president

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said it is better for Guyana’s oil sector if Nicolas Maduro becomes president of Venezuela.
“Between Maduro and the right in Venezuela, I advise you to choose Maduro. The right will seek to allow the Americans to keep the oil in Venezuela, to set up shop to take over PDVSA and try to run the Guyana oil industry from Caracas,” Gonsalves said.

The Prime Minister reiterated that he believed Venezuela’s July 28 elections were “fair and free.”

“The United States cannot teach me about elections and democracy. I have seen what has happened in my life,” the president said.

He stressed that he believes that Venezuelans, by rejecting the right-wing opposition, implemented a measure that resulted in security and democracy.
He recalled that “the right has historically always exerted pressure against Guyana in Venezuela.”

Guyana, a sought-after country for US companies, has seen an economic revolution since the discovery of crude oil off its coast in 2015, and its reserves now total some 11 billion barrels.
