The Ombudsman’s Office has asked the Government to declare a state of emergency in the regions affected by large-scale forest fires, which have so far claimed at least ten lives.

Through their social networks, lThe Ombudsman reported that with this measure An effective response is expected from the Government in coordination with the regions and municipalities.
“We urge the Executive to declare a state of emergency in areas affected by large-scale forest fires (Amazonas and Ucayali, among other departments), for an effective response from the national government coordinated with regional and local governments,” the publication reads.
The agency also requested that the figures for active, controlled and extinguished fires be made transparent.
The request was made to the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci), as responsible for the operation and administration of the National Information System for Disaster Prevention and Response (Sinpad), and to regional and local governments, as they are responsible for carrying out damage assessments.
The Ombudsman’s Office noted that specialized first response entities are required to carry out immediate actions at the affected sites.
“It is urgent that specialized first response entities (Ministry of Defense, PNP, Firefighters) develop immediate actions in affected areas, in safeguarding the physical integrity of the population and agricultural areas, coordinating with regional and local authorities,” the Ombudsman’s Office added in a statement.
According to Juan Carlos Urcariegui Reyes, head of the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci), there are 49 active forest fires in the regions of Amazon, Ancash, Apurimac, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, La Libertad, Puno and TumbesMeanwhile, another 20 fires are already under control.
It was learned that Ucayali and Amazonas are still waiting for help from the Executive.
