Venezuela’s majority opposition calls for a “global mobilization” against Maduro

María Corina Machado

Caracas, Sep 14 (EFE).- Venezuela’s majority opposition called on Saturday for a “global mobilization” on September 28, two months after the presidential elections in which it claims that its standard-bearer, Edmundo González Urrutia, won, despite the fact that the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Nicolás Maduro’s victory.

Through social media, the anti-Chavez supporters explained that the demonstration aims to demand worldwide recognition of González Urrutia – exiled since September 8 in Spain – as “president-elect”, to reject Maduro and to demand the cessation of “crimes against humanity”.

He also noted that the mobilization will take place “within the framework of the UN General Assembly.”

“Our voice knows no borders and our will for change will reach every corner of the planet. We will raise our voices to demand recognition of Edmundo González as president-elect, to reject Maduro (…) and no more crimes against humanity,” wrote Comando con Venezuela, the campaign team of the former presidential candidate, in X.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado, González Urrutia’s main supporter, also shared the call for September 28, when – she said – Venezuelans will “make the whole world rumble.”

“We are all united in the same cause: the freedom of Venezuela. After two months of our spectacular victory, we will raise our voices,” said the former deputy, who shared a video showing several personalities from the Caribbean country, such as the singer Carlos Baute and the actors Édgar Ramírez and Omar Rudberg, with brief phrases about the “political change” that – they insist – was decided on July 28.

Among the messages, they claim that, in the presidential elections, Venezuela “manifested its will for change” and chose “dignity over submission” and “democracy over tyranny.”

The majority opposition announced this call a week after its standard-bearer left the Caribbean country for Spain after requesting asylum, considering that he was suffering political and judicial persecution in Venezuela after the elections.

The opposition candidate was called to testify before the Public Prosecutor’s Office on three occasions due to an investigation against him related to the publication, on a website, of “83.5% of the minutes” obtained through people who were witnesses and members of the table on election day and which reflect, according to the PUD, the “victory” of González Urrutia.

When he did not appear, a court issued an arrest warrant for González Urrutia, who had been a refugee for more than a month until September 5 in the Dutch Embassy, from where he moved to the Spanish Embassy, where he remained until Saturday, September 7, when he left Venezuela. EFE
