Diosdado Cabello, Minister of the Interior and Justice, announced the arrest of two Spanish citizens, three Americans and a Czech, involved in an alleged operation aimed at carrying out “terrorist” acts, including the assassination of President Nicolás Maduro. The Spanish embassy is asking to verify the identity and nationality of those arrested.

The Spanish Embassy in Venezuela has asked the government of Nicolás Maduro to have access to the two detainees, accused of terrorism, to verify their identities and nationality and, if they are Spanish citizens, to know exactly what they are accused of and to ensure that they can receive all necessary assistance.

Sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have informed EFE that the Embassy has sent a verbal note to the Government of Venezuela with this request, and has assured that “the protection and rights of any Spaniard detained in Venezuela will be ensured at all times.”

Previously, government sources have denied that the two Spaniards arrested in Venezuela belong to the National Intelligence Centre (CNI), as suggested by the Minister of the Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabello, when reporting on their arrest on the accusation that they were trying to carry out “terrorist” acts.

Cabello announced the arrest of two Spanish citizens, three Americans and a Czech, involved in an alleged operation aimed at carrying out “terrorist” acts, including the assassination of President Nicolás Maduro. According to Cabello, the Spanish citizens respond to the names of José María Basoa Valdovinos and Andrés Martínez Adasme.

The minister said that these two Spanish citizens “have links” with the Spanish National Intelligence Centre (CNI).

According to the Venezuelan minister, more than 400 weapons “transported from the United States” were seized in the operation, and some of those captured were seeking to bring “a group of mercenaries” to Venezuela with the purpose of assassinating Maduro, as well as the vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, and other Chavista leaders.

During a speech to the media, he said that the CIA is leading the operation, as is the National Intelligence Centre of Spain. According to Cabello, and based on alleged confessions of people captured for these events, “mercenaries” of French and Eastern European origin have been contacted to try to generate violence and assassinate high-ranking government officials.

“This is a network. We have a group of people arrested who are part of this network. We carried out raids and people had rifles in their homes, linked to the acts of violence they planned to generate,” he said.
