Laura Raffoformer candidate of the National Party, has made the decision to join Alianza País after her disengagement from HerrerismoThe resolution was the result of several days of discussions within the National Party. His incorporation into this new sector was made official this Thursday. According to political sources, Raffo will take over as second alternate on the Senate list.

This place behind Javier García and Luis Lacalle Pou previously had another destination: it was intended for the mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía. The original proposal to Antía had been made on Saturday, at a time when Raffo was on his way to Masoller, according to party sources informed El Observador.

Changes in the Senate lists

On Friday, after announcing his departure from Herrerismo, Sebastian da Silva had offered Raffo the fourth position on the list, but this option did not materialize. Raffo will be joined by an important technical team that accompanied her in the primaries, thus strengthening the new political coalition.

With Raffo’s presence, Alianza País’ list for the Senate will be structured as follows: Luis Lacalle Pou, Javier Garcia, Laura Raffofollowed by Sergio Botana, Jorge Larrañaga Vidal, María Fajardo, Carlos Camy and Sebastián da Silva. This change is significant in the current political configuration of the National Party.

Disengagement from Herrerismo

Raffo’s departure from Herrerismo was formalized at the beginning of September, motivated by the decision that Senator Luis Alberto Heber would head the list, which, according to Raffo, violated a previous agreement. In Raffo’s words, “the value of a given word and commitment to the people are the essence of politics. Defending these principles was, is and will always be my guiding light.”

Raffo’s resignation from Herrerismo surprised Uruguayan politics. In her letter to Luis Alberto Heber, Raffo stated that her departure was due to the failure to comply with her promise to lead list 71 for the next elections, thus redefining the dynamics of the National Party.

Before this outcome, a meeting took place between Raffo, Heber and former president Lacalle Herrera. At this meeting, Raffo was informed that he would occupy the second place on list 71, a fact that he considered a breach of the previous commitments of Herrerismo, since his leadership on said list had been promised.
