The Mexican group opposed the registration of the Colombian orchestra, according to sources, because it affected its recognition in the music market.

The dispute centered on the potential confusion that the use of the name “Tigers” could cause among fans and the general public.

The controversy began when Los Tigres del Norte, famous for their successful corridos and their influence on the norteño genre, opposed the registration of the trademark “Los Tigres Azules” before the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) of Colombia. The Mexican band alleged that the use of the term “Tigres” in combination with the color blue could lead to confusion between their trademark and the new one, affecting their recognition in the music market.

Defense of the Blue Tigers

In response, Los Tigres Azules defended their right to register the trademark. They argued that, despite the similarity in name, the two bands operate in clearly different cultural and market contexts. According to their defense:

“Both brands represent different market segments and cultural contexts, demonstrating clear conceptual differences. On the one hand, the ‘Tigres Azules’ sign, present in the Colombian market, refers to a blue animal, which does not exist and has no relation to the service it offers as a musical group in the Colombian cumbia genre,” they indicated.

Decision of the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce

After reviewing the arguments presented by both parties, the SIC concluded that, although there was a similarity in the names, it was not significant enough to cause real confusion among consumers. Ultimately, the Mexican group lost the lawsuit.
