Water service projects announced

Felipe Suberví, general director of the Santo Domingo Water and Sewer Corporation (CAASD), announced a series of strategic projects aimed at solving the historical problems of water supply and drainage in the city.

In an interview on the Despierta con CDN program, Suberví detailed the infrastructure plans under development to ensure an adequate water supply and an efficient drainage system.

Among the highlighted projects, he mentioned the Hatillo dam as a priority for the CAASD. “One of the commitments requested by the president is to carry out water storage projects. The Hatillo dam is key in this regard. We are planning the installation of a pipeline of approximately 66 kilometers that will allow the transport of up to 10 cubic meters of water per second. This would represent about 50% of the current water production for the city, significantly improving storage and guaranteeing a continuous and stable supply.”

Suberví also referred to the Haina dam, also known as La Madrigal, explaining that it is a long-term solution for water supply. “We are working on a design tailored to the current and future needs of the city. The Haina dam is projected as a crucial infrastructure to ensure long-term water supply.”

Replacing old pipes

Felipe Suberví also pointed out that the Don Juan dam, located in Monte Plata, is also part of the expansion plans. “This dam will have a capacity of 4 cubic meters and is aimed at strengthening the water infrastructure in the region. Its construction is essential to guarantee an adequate supply of water for urban growth,” he added.

The official also addressed current problems in the pipeline system, which include pipelines that are more than 100 years old and the impact of water hammer, which can cause pipeline explosions.

“We are in the process of replacing obsolete pipes and have installed new networks in more than 105 sectors that previously did not have adequate water supply. Our goal in this four-year period is to complete the water network in Greater Santo Domingo,” he added.

The engineer also highlighted the Comprehensive Drainage Plan (PIS), which includes the construction of tunnels for storm and sanitary drainage. “This project is expensive, with an estimated investment of 350 million dollars for the first stage. It will cover the Luperón and connect existing tunnels with new ones, which will require the adaptation of the existing urban infrastructure.”
