Añez denounces torture and loses another legal battle

Jeanine Áñez will not go out. The Sixth Criminal Investigation Judge of the city of La Paz rejected an appeal filed by his daughter, Carolina Ribera, against the governor of the Miraflores Prison, Stephania Cervantes.

The appeal was filed byFailure to comply with a court order issued on Friday for Áñez to be released from jail to a hospital. However, Judge Franklin Siñani backed down and pointed out the “material inability” to carry out this transfer due to the protest that was installed at the gates of the prison.

In yesterday’s hearing, which was held virtually, the former president denounced actions of “psychological torture” by the police personnel and doctors of the Penitentiary Regime. He also indicated that his first-born was tricked out of the prison.

“They told her that my lawyer was downstairs, that she had to leave so she could come in, and I never saw her again. I didn’t hear more about her because she didn’t come back,” Áñez said in her defense.

The former president, who spent 10 days on a hunger strike last week, seemed weakened because the tremor in her body did not go away as she spoke for almost 10 minutes. Behind her, two women dressed in medical staff attire appeared.. They remained there throughout the hearing, which lasted for five hours.

Áñez’s defense had filed a release action against the prison authorities and denounced that the former dignitary was kidnapped because they were not allowed to enter. “The former president is now incommunicado, that is her legal situation”affirmed the defense attorney, Luis Adolfo Guillén.

Áñez in her speech reported that that Friday, after her daughter was withdrawn, health personnel and doctors were admitted to carry out a new assessment and they warned him that there were no options to resist those diagnoses.

Judge Siñani’s second instruction indicated that she should be treated in prison, even against his will. To this end, he alleged the obligation of the State to protect the lives of people who are deprived of their liberty.

Former Minister Reymi Ferreira argued that the unfortunate image of Áñez, shown by some media outlets, is not the product of torture, on the contrary, it is a product of the self-flagellation of not eating.

“Which obviously serves a political purpose and shows profound disregard for his own physical integrity. It is a great sentimental manipulation, sensitive “said the ex-authority of the government of Evo Morales.

“Someone who does not respect his own life, it is very difficult for him to respect another’s. This political action wants those responsible for 37 murders that occurred in the management of him. rather they look like martyrs”, Ferreira affirmed to Bolivia Tv.

When Áñez became president, a dozen deaths had already been registered as a result of the post-electoral tensions of 2019, according to the report that in August 2021 presented the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) on the political crisis of that year.

The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights recalled that The State must take care of the lives of detainees.
