Piña calls for dialogue and reconciliation amid discussion of Judicial Reform

The minister defended the association and peaceful protest of the judges who legitimately demonstrate to demand to be heard in the legislative deliberations of the Judicial Reform.

Last week, Piña joined the street protests against the Judicial Reform. Accompanied by workers and students, she called for the defense of the Power of the Union that she represents.

Over the weekend, the official presented a proposal for comprehensive Judicial Reform. Not only is the proposal not compatible with the initiative of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, but it also combats at least seven of the postulates and the discourse raised by Morena and the president, which would make it impassable.

Calls for the taking of the tribune

After taking over the Senate platform, Gerardo Fernández Noroña called on legislators from all parties to continue the discussion of the Judicial Reform at the Old Senate Headquarters in Xicoténcatl, while opposition politicians called on Morena and its allies to assist the protesters who took over the platform.

“What is happening in the Senate is a clear symptom that society does not feel heard or taken into account,” said Marko Cortés, a leader of the National Action Party (PAN) who long ago announced his vote against the changes proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Ricardo Anaya, a PAN senator, said that the ruling party had provoked “the awakening of the tiger,” paraphrasing an old phrase by López Obrador.

Luis Donaldo Colosio, from the Citizen Movement (MC), complained that the protesters had been ignored.

Alejandro Moreno, from the PRI, said that the López Obrador government has provoked these demonstrations by wanting to approve a Judicial Reform “that destroys the system.”

”Here we are. This is the Senate of the Republic. They did not listen to the people, that is why people are like this. This reform must be stopped. They have to call for elections, but this is what this Government is doing, which divides the country. The people do not want this reform. We in the PRI are going to vote against it,” said the tricolor leader in an interview with Radio Fórmula.

The coordinator of Movimiento a Ciudadano, Clemente Castañeda, said that it was “irresponsible” to call a session at 7:00 p.m. when there were “no conditions” to do so.

“How irresponsible of the president of the board of directors, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, to call a session that clearly does not have the conditions to be held,” he wrote on his social networks.

Meanwhile, the PAN coordinator, Guadalupe Murguía, said that the protesters who entered the Senate did so because they were not heard, and she considered that dialogue with those who disagree with the Judicial Reform should be exhausted.

“Protesters who have been asking to be heard and attended to for weeks have arrived,” said the PAN member.

Xóchitl Gálvez, who led the opposition in the last presidential election, said that the demonstration “is the result of Morena’s refusal to listen to the people of Mexico.”

“I call on both sides to respect the free expression of ideas without resorting to violence,” he said.
