With the approval of this standard, Peru has become the third country in the region, along with Chile and Ecuador, to commit to implementing the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) Standard.
The regulation ensures that fisheries management is carried out in a more sustainable way. In this sense, it promotes compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals, which establish “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.”
This initiative is aligned with various policies and strategies that promote ethics, citizen participation and a more open government, all supported by digital transformation in public management. Furthermore, the implementation of FiTI is closely related to the process of Peru’s inclusion in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which reinforces the country’s position as a leader in the sustainable management of its marine resources.
The law also provides for transparency in the fishing sector. This regulation will allow citizens to access key information on decisions that impact our oceans, encouraging greater participation by all stakeholders. This includes artisanal fishing communities, which play a fundamental role in the national economy and will now have clearer access to the decision-making processes that directly affect them.
