Start of the government
Jorge Ramos first questioned the president on April 12, 2019, during his morning press conference, about the figure of 8,524 homicides during the first quarter of his government.
“The data I have says otherwise, they are not being controlled (homicides), on the contrary, many Mexicans continue to die,” said the journalist.
The president rejected Ramos’s claims and showed a graph, but the journalist insisted that it was the total number of homicides in the country, which the president admitted he did not have available at that time.

“I am not saying -let this be clear- that the problem has been solved; what I am saying is that we have maintained the levels that existed before or that the trend that we had regarding the crime of homicide has been reversed,” López Obrador insisted.
The highest number of homicides since the Revolution
“That is something that really gets people excited,” the president replied when questioned by Jorge Ramos for the second time during his morning press conference on June 15, 2020.
The Univision journalist accused López Obrador of recording the highest number of homicides since the Mexican Revolution at the beginning of the 20th century.
“Mexico is becoming more and more violent and you are the president with the worst figures since the Revolution. From December 2018 to November 2019, 34,579 people have been murdered, intentional homicides, violent homicides,” Ramos said.
The president then attributed the murders to the social and economic neglect of previous administrations.
“It is a problem that we have not been able to resolve, there is an explanation, not a justification: the problem of insecurity and violence was allowed to grow too much, the causes were not addressed, productive activity was abandoned, jobs were not created, salaries in Mexico are also the lowest in the world, corruption in Mexico was among the highest.
