President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva authorized the use of the Armed Forces to guarantee voting and counting of votes in the 2024 elections. The decree was published in Official Gazette of the Unionthis Monday (9).
The locations and period of employment of the Armed Forces will be defined according to the terms of the request from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
The participation of the Armed Forces in the electoral process is provided for in the Federal Constitution and the Electoral Code.
The decree was signed jointly by President Lula, the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro and the Minister-Chief of the Institutional Security Office (GSI) of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcos Antonio Amaro dos Santos.
Municipal elections
In municipal elections, mayors, deputy mayors and councilors are elected. Only in the Federal District there are no municipal elections.
The first round of the 2024 municipal elections is scheduled for October 6. The second round will take place on October 27, in the election for mayors of municipalities with more than 200,000 voters, when none of the candidates for the position obtains more than half of the valid votes (excluding blank and null votes) to be elected.
According to the TSE, more than 55,91 thousand voters, distributed across 5,569 municipalities. Compared to 2020, there was a 5% increase in the number of voters, making this year’s municipal election the largest ever in the country.
As for the candidates, the court counted 461,012 requests for registration of candidates in October, with 15,465 candidates for the position of mayor; 15,682 for vice-mayor; and 429,865 for councilor.
