Opposition leader María Corina Machado spoke out on Sunday, September 8, regarding the departure of Edmundo González to Spain and stated that the life of the former presidential candidate was in danger. “He was the victim of threats, court summons, arrest warrants and even attempts at blackmail and coercion.” She assured on her social network X that the candidate for the presidential elections of last July 28 will continue to carry out actions in favor of the country’s democracy and that in January 2025 he will be sworn in as president of Venezuela.

“Let this be very clear to everyone: Edmundo will fight from outside alongside our diaspora and I will continue to do so here, alongside you,” Machado said.

He stated that the life of Ambassador González Urrutia “was in danger”, and that the increasing threats, summons, arrest warrants and even attempts at blackmail and coercion to which he was subjected, demonstrated that there was an attempt to “silence him and try to subdue him (…)
In the face of this brutal reality, it is necessary for our cause to preserve his freedom, his integrity and his life.”

The presidential candidate for the opposition parties that make up the Unitary Platform left the country this Saturday 7th for Spain, where he was granted asylum.

Machado said in his letter that this action of granting a safe conduct to González Urrutia “delegitimizes and sinks, every day more” the ruler Nicolás Maduro, who the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared the winner of the presidential elections, but without showing proof of the results.

“But, once again, they were wrong. Their attempted coup against Popular Sovereignty will not come to fruition. On January 10, 2025, President-Elect Edmundo González Urrutia will be sworn in as Constitutional President of Venezuela and Commander-in-Chief of the National Armed Forces,” said the leader of the Vente Venezuela party.
