The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a brief statement, reported that presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia had taken off from Caracas heading to Spain on a Spanish Air Force plane on the night of Saturday, September 7.
The Spanish government announced that Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia left the country on Saturday, September 7, after requesting political asylum in that country, confirming what Vice President Delcy Rodríguez had already announced.
According to Rodríguez, González Urrutia, 75 years old, was seeking refuge in the Spanish embassy and requested political asylum from that government. “In this sense, once the relevant contacts between both governments had taken place, the extremes of the case had been met and in compliance with international law, Venezuela has granted the necessary safe-conducts for the sake of the country’s tranquility and political peace,” Rodríguez details on his Instagram account.
José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Government of Spain, reported that González Urrutia “at his own request” flew to Spain on September 7 on a Spanish Air Force plane. “The Government of Spain is committed to the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans,” Albares wrote on the social network X, formerly Twitter.
The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a brief releasewhere it reported: “Edmundo González has taken off from Caracas heading for Spain in a Spanish Air Force plane. The Government of Spain has arranged the diplomatic means and materials necessary for his transfer, carried out at his request.”
The Government of Spain said that it “reiterates its commitment to the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans, especially political leaders.”

Vice President Delcy Rodríguez said that González Urrutia, “after having taken refuge in the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain for several days,” requested political asylum from that government.
“Once the relevant contacts between both governments have taken place, the extremes of the case have been met and in compliance with international law, Venezuela has granted the appropriate safe-conduct passes “for the sake of the country’s tranquility and political peace,” Rodríguez posted on the social network Instagram.

Pedro Sánchez, President of Spain, indicated earlier on September 7, during his speech at the Federal Committee of the PSOE, that the Iberian country was not going to “abandon” Edmundo González Urrutiawhom he also described as a “hero.”

The opposition claims that González Urrutia won the presidential elections on July 28 with 7,303,480 votes (67%), while Nicolás Maduro obtained 3,316,142 votes (30%). The National Electoral Council has still not published the minutes of the elections, which led to protests throughout the country against the results. In response, Nicolás Maduro’s government has increased repression against the population, imprisoning more than 2,000 people in one week.
González Urrutia was subject to an arrest warrant requested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The leader had notified, through his lawyer José Vicente Haro, the reasons why he did not attend the three previous summons, which had been ordered by that institution before requesting his arrest.
