Ministers in favour of judicial reform
On Thursday, September 5, student, youth and Morena party-affiliated organizations called for a demonstration outside the SCJN in support of judicial reform.
The ministers attended this mobilization Lenia Batres and Loretta Ortizwho have shown affinity for President López Obrador’s initiative.
Although both ministers have given interviews to the media and their positions on judicial reform are even public on social media, they had not attended a rally of this kind to address a message to supporters.
Speaking on a platform and in front of hundreds of students and social organizations, Minister Loretta Ortiz announced that she will participate in the election of judges and magistrates, as proposed in the judicial reform, if it is approved.
“We are your servants, we are here to serve you, that is the reason for our function and our existence, only to serve you, that is my mandate and I hope to continue to uphold and respect it and that will be thanks to your vote,” she said.
Minister Batres Guadarrama described the discussion on judicial reform as a historic moment, in which Mexicans will participate democratically. Meanwhile, Minister Yasmin Esquivelalthough absent from the debate, has expressed his support for President López Obrador’s proposal.
In parallel to this debate in the Legislative Branch, workers in the Judiciary and the Supreme Court have decided to suspend work in protest, adding to the tension surrounding the ongoing judicial reform.
