The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued Resolution 64/2024 on Friday, September 6, granting precautionary measures in favor of Nélida del Rosario Sánchez Oropeza, national coordinator of Súmate, “considering that she is in a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to her rights in Venezuela.”
Nélida Sánchez was arrested on August 26, 2024 by agents of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin). On August 28, 2024, she was transferred to an unknown location. Sánchez’s relatives indicated that she suffers from illnesses that require special care, but so far there is no news about her health status or whether she is receiving adequate medical attention.
According to the letter of the CIDH, the relatives of the national coordinator of Súmate, went to the Helicoide, Caracas, to seek news of his whereabouts and received no response, nor to the complaint of forced disappearance. “Given the lack of response from the State, the Commission has no elements to assess the actions that would have been initiated in his favor,” the organization indicates.

The Resolution for Sanchez
The Inter-American Commission therefore requests that Venezuela: adopt the necessary measures to protect Sánchez Oropeza’s rights to life and personal integrity; implement the necessary measures so that he can carry out his human rights defense activities without being subjected to threats, harassment or acts of violence; and report on the actions taken to investigate the alleged events that gave rise to this precautionary measure and thus prevent their repetition.
The IACHR is a principal and autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), whose mandate arises from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has the mandate to promote the observance of human rights in the region and to act as an advisory body to the OAS in this area.
