In ARI’s La Conversa, the member of the Bandera Roja board of directors said that Maduro’s government has distanced itself from the ideals of the national and international left. She described the appointment of Ricardo Sánchez as Minister of Higher Education as a disgrace.
Although Chavismo calls itself a revolutionary leftist movement, sectors of this trend inside and outside the country have expressed their opposition to the Nicolás Maduro regime.
The Venezuelan Communist Party (PCV) chose to support the former Centrados candidate, Enrique Márquez, in the last presidential elections, while leftist-leaning administrations such as that of Gabriel Boric in Chile have made public their notorious opposition to the Maduro government, especially after the results of June 28, which declared the government the winner without showing minutes or detailed details and which unleashed a bloody repression against dissidents and civil society.
To delve deeper into the topic, Sairam Rivasmember of the board of directors of Bandera Roja, participated this Tuesday, September 3, in a new edition of La Conversa de la Rebel Alliance Investigates (ARI) made up of Runrun.es, El Pitazo and SuchWhichwhich was titled The left confronts Maduro for violating human rights.
In addition to Rivas, the program included Victor Amaya, director of SuchWhich and Cesar Batiz, director of El Pitazo.
For the member of Bandera Roja, the ultimate goal of her party is to “get rid of the dictatorship.”
“And in this sense, we must build a greater unity. The left-wing sectors have to play a unifying role; we can only get out of this situation through unity; the regime cannot be defeated through sectarianism,” said Rivas.
The leader said that there have been enough statements from the international left, including the administrations of Gustavo Petro in Colombia and Luis Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil.
“We need them to not only ask for a repeat election, but to make the regime understand that they have to respect the popular will of the Venezuelan people.there are Marxist-Leninist organizations that continue to have relations with the regime, but they have to take off their masks, because this is not a revolutionary government, this is a regime that violates human rights on a daily basis.”
Rivas said that The history of Red Flag has been one of struggle and unmasking.
“We have never supported this government. First we were with the Democratic Coordinator and now with the Unitary Platform. There are many people, even within the regime, who are being threatened. We have witnessed prosecutors being dismissed for refusing to imprison protesters. Networks have been created to inform on people. The houses of dissidents in the popular sectors have been marked with an X, people are arrested for a simple WhatsApp status. This has nothing to do with left or right.”
Rivas said that the regimes of the late President Hugo Chavez and Maduro came to power with a deep feeling of hatred and resentment.
“Maduro has overcome repressions like that of Pinochet in Chile.”
Against thought
The member of the board of directors of Bandera Roja said that Maduro has undertaken a policy of destruction of the university environment and knowledge.
“I find it shameful that a person like Ricardo Sánchez, who was part of the Federation of University Centers, is now Minister of Higher Education and supports this regime. It is an insult to the spirit of the Central University of Venezuela. Those of us who come from the student movement find it incredible that a peaceful march cannot reach the Ministry of Education.”
Rivas said that Chavismo has had a profound impact on young people.
“We have all had moments of sacrifice. I was detained in 2014 when Miguel Rodríguez Torres was Minister of Justice and when he was arrested I disagreed, because he is not being arrested for the crimes he committed in the past, but simply for being an opponent and thinking differently.”
The leader of Bandera Roja said that the Maduro regime has taken away fundamental freedoms from young people and students.
“I was able to study, but people currently do not have the possibility of earning a decent salary. This government has given salaries a bonus and put an end to collective bargaining, an emblem of the leftist struggle worldwide.”
Rivas said that he has recently been in charge of accompanying the families of political prisoners.
“To expose the human rights violations that are being committed in Venezuela, common points of agreement are required, and in this sense I find the efforts of the Committee of Defenders of Political Prisoners commendable. Unfortunately, we are in a similar situation to the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo in Argentina.”
Rivas denounced that in addition to being arbitrarily detained, political prisoners and their families are subjected to extortion.
“Our task is to seek areas of agreement; agreements must be on basic points to save the Republic. We must demand an end to torture and the right to legitimate defense for those detained. We will not rest until we achieve freedom for political prisoners, an end to repression, and the return of those in exile.”
