Between January and March 2024, Mexico recorded a preliminary 212,404 deaths, mainly from heart disease, diabetes or tumors, which represented an increase of 4,965 compared to the same period in 2023, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
The causes of death in the population vary according to age and sex. Some are less frequent with age, others become noticeable as the population ages, and others are present in most age groups. However, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, malignant tumors, influenza and pneumonia, and liver disease are the five main causes of death nationwide.
Exceptionally, causes of death with a significant impact on the population arise, as occurred with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thus, according to the Statistics of Registered Deaths: January to March 2024 (preliminary), The death rate per 100,000 inhabitants was 163.7, similar to that of the same period in 2023 (160.4).
During the first quarter of 2024, Inegi estimated that 55.51 percent of the registered deaths corresponded to men and 44.44 percent to women. In 97 cases, the sex of the person was not specified.
The highest percentage of deaths occurred in people over 64 years of age, which amounted to 59.6 percent (including four cases in which the sex of the deceased was not specified).
By states
The states with the highest number of deaths recorded by place of occurrence were Mexico City, with 232.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants; Morelos, 215.6 cases; Colima, 189.1; Chihuahua, 186.6, and Veracruz, 184.2. The chances of a young person living to later stages depend largely on, for example, where in the world they live.
The main causes of death among young men between 15 and 44 years old in Mexico were assaults (homicides); for adolescents between 10 and 14 years old, transport accidents. Meanwhile, for young women between 15 and 24 years old, the main cause of death, according to Inegi, was accidents, and for those between 25 and 44 years old, it was malignant tumors.
This information comes from death certificates from civil registry offices and forensic medical services, as well as from death certificates from the former and from statistical notebooks from the Public Prosecutor’s Offices, Inegi reported.
