Relatives of cancer patients protest against judicial reform
A small group of relatives of cancer patients joined the protests against the reform of the Judicial Branch. These are people who have filed for legal protection to access medicines and health services denied to their loved ones in public hospitals.
The demonstration took place this morning at the Monument to the Revolution because they fear that the next judges will no longer grant them protection following the constitutional modifications promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, approved in the Chamber of Deputies.
Faced with the shortcomings of the Mexican health system, dozens of patients began filing injunctions during this administration to demand medicines and other health services.
“When the authorities are negligent, what do citizens turn to? They turn to legal protection. It is the only mechanism left to defend against violations of rights, such as the right to health,” explained Andrea Rocha, a lawyer for the National Union against Shortages.
This association has filed 450 appeals in the last six years so that patients can access medical treatment in a timely manner. “If it is a Judiciary in the mold of the ruling party, it will cease to be impartial and, then, our suspensions, our sentences, what will happen to them?” he said.
With four family members, the lawyer joined the protests that are taking place this Thursday outside the Senate of the Republic, where the discussion of the Judicial Reform will continue. “In these years it was the State that did not resolve the shortage of medicines and we are afraid that the injunctions will no longer be granted in accordance with the law,” she declared.
