Costa Rica to be informed about the barriers faced by Nicaraguan refugees to access university

The Bridges for Students Initiative of Nicaragua (IPEN) invited young Nicaraguan refugees in Costa Rica to participate in a study that seeks to identify “the barriers that displaced Nicaraguan youth in Costa Rica encounter, which prevent them from integrating into the higher education system.”

The IPEN study is aimed at Nicaraguan refugees who are under 35 years old and who have resided in that country for at least two years without being able to access university studies.

Young Nicaraguans who wish to participate in the study can access the following linkwhere they will anonymously answer a 43-question form, some related to their age, sex, academic level, sexual orientation, origin and immigration status.

Other questions are related to whether they have tried to enter a Costa Rican university, whether they consider whether their immigration status is a disadvantage for enrolling in a higher education center, whether their immigration documents have been rejected, among others.

Costa Rican organizations will know the results

IPEN indicated that this survey “is part of a broader diagnostic process and aims to gather data that allow us to better understand the difficulties and limitations that young Nicaraguans have had since they migrated to Costa Rica in 2018.”

He also revealed that the results of this study will be “presented publicly, as well as to governmental and international organizations, in order to promote initiatives that facilitate the access of Nicaraguans to the higher education system, both in Costa Rica and in other countries.”
