Galípolo's vote for BC presidency is scheduled for October 8

The Senate plenary is expected to consider the nomination of the current director of Monetary Policy at the Central Bank, Gabriel Galípolo, for the presidency of the bank on October 8, after the first round of municipal elections. Rodrigo Pacheco also asked the president of the Economic Affairs Committee (CAE), Senator Vanderlan Cardoso (PSD/GO), to hold the Galípolo hearing before that date. nominated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the presidency of the BC must undergo a hearing and vote in the CAE before being analyzed by the Senate Plenary.

Senator Rodrigo Pacheco recalled that the electoral period has a low quorum in Parliament and, therefore, decided on a date after the first round of the municipal elections.

“It is this first week after the election that will allow all senators, more or less involved in the electoral campaigns, to be able to carry out their relevant political role, which is the political-electoral role, and to be here, in the Federal Senate, in person,” argued the senator.

The leader of the opposition in the Senate, Senator Marcos Rogério (PL/RO), asked that the vote be postponed until after the second round to give the candidate more time to talk to all the senators.

“This nominee must have the opportunity to talk to all senators before being questioned by the CAE,” he highlighted.

The government leader, Senator Jaques Wagner (PT/BA), considered that Gabriel Galípolo has already spoken to more than 30 senators and that he will have time to speak to everyone before October 8th.

The press office of the president of the CAE, Senator Vanderlan, informed that there is still no date for the hearing and vote on the nomination in the collegiate.

Economist Gabriel Galípolo is the Director of Monetary Policy at the Central Bank, a position he has held since July 2023. He was Secretary of Economy and Transportation for the government of São Paulo; he worked at the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), the Brazilian Center for International Relations and Banco Fator, an institution he founded. In 2023, he took on the role of Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, until he was nominated and approved for the board of the BC.

If approved by the Senate, Galípolo will take over as president of the Bank from Roberto Campos Neto. Appointed by the previous government, Campos Neto is criticized by the current government for maintaining high interest rates. Campos Neto’s term ends on December 31.
