MADRID, Spain.- Cuban paraweightist Pablo Ramírez won the silver medal in the 54 kilogram category at the Paris 2024 Paralympic GamesOn September 4, at the Arena La Chapelle, Ramírez lifted 185 kilograms in his second attempt; a personal best that guaranteed him a place on the podium.
Ramirez, 27, from Guantanamo, began the competition with a failed attempt at 184 kilograms. However, he adjusted for his second attempt and lifted 185 kg without any problems. He tried to beat his mark with 187 kg on the third attempt, but was unable to do so. Despite this, his lift was enough to take the silver, beating China’s Yang Jinglang, who took the bronze with 179 kg.
Kazakh David Degtyarev, Paralympic champion in Tokyo 2020, defended his title by lifting 188 kilograms.
Pablo Ramírez had already demonstrated his ability at the Santiago 2023 ParaPan American Games, where he won silver in the under 58 kg category with a lift of 161 kg.
With this medal, the Cuban delegation has won five medals at the Paris Paralympic Games: three gold (with the sprinter Omara Durand, the long jumper Yankiel Sol and the javelin thrower Guillermo Varona) and two silver ones (the one for the sprinter Yamel Luis Vives In addition to Ramírez’s). The Cuban delegation currently occupies 26th place in the overall medal table.
On Thursday, September 5, Omara Durand will compete in the 100-meter final, where she will try to win her second title at these games and her tenth Olympic medal.
