Brazil surpasses 50 medals mark at the Paralympics

Brazil won nine more medals this Wednesday, the 4th, at the Paris Paralympic Games. The delegation now has 57 podium finishes, including 15 golds, 15 silvers and 27 bronzes. Swimmer Carol Santiago from Pernambuco won her third gold in this edition, as well as a silver in the 4×100 freestyle relay – 49 points, and reached nine podium finishes in history.Brazil surpasses 50 medals mark at the Paralympics

It was also a day of unprecedented medals in athletics with Bartolomeu Chaves, Ariosvaldo Silva, known as Parré, and Wanna Brito.

In her weightlifting debut, Lara Lima from Minas Gerais took bronze in the up to 41kg category.

Athletics

Maranhão sprinter Bartolomeu Chaves secured his first podium finish at the Paralympic Games this Wednesday, the 4th, in the 400m T37 class (cerebral palsy for walking). He won the silver medal at the Stade de France, the venue for the athletics events.

“I gave it everything I had, really everything. My knee was inflamed during acclimatization, but with the help of the CPB staff we managed to get better and run to get this medal. I felt a bit of pain on the straight, my legs felt heavy, but in the end it worked out,” said Bartolomeu.

Paraíba native Ariosvaldo Silva, known as Parré, won his first medal at the Paralympic Games by taking bronze in the 100m T53 class, for athletes competing in wheelchairs, with a time of 15.08. Saudi Arabian Abdulrahman Alqurashi took gold with a time of 14.48, followed by Thailand’s Pongsakorn Paeyo, who clocked 14.66.

Verônica Hipólito from São Paulo won bronze in the 100m T36 class (cerebral palsy) with a time of 14.24. The gold went to China’s Yiting Shi, with a time of 13.39, and New Zealand’s Danielle Aitchison took silver with a time of 13.43. Another Brazilian involved in the competition, Samira Brito from Bahia, was disqualified for jumping the start.

Wanna Brito from Amapá won her first medal at the Paralympic Games. She took silver in the F32 shot put, which is intended for people with cerebral palsy who compete sitting down, with a throw of 7.89m, a new record for the Americas.

The gold went to Tokyo Paralympic champion Anastasiia Moskalenko of Ukraine, with a mark of 8.00m, a new world record. The bronze went to Evgeniia Galaktionova of the Neutral Paralympic Athletes (NPA), who cleared 7.72m.

Qualifiers

Another Brazilian in the event, Giovanna Boscolo from São Paulo finished in 9th place with a mark of 5.61m.

Two Brazilians competed in the 100m heats in the T11 class (visual impairment) on Wednesday morning, the 4th, at the Stade de France. Daniel Mendes from Espírito Santo finished the race in 11.73 seconds, his best time of the season. Felipe Gomes from Rio de Janeiro ran a time of 11.69 seconds. Felipe came in 13th, while Daniel finished his participation in 14th place. Neither of them advanced to the next round.

Eduardo Pereira from São Paulo competed in the F34 class (cerebral palsy) javelin throw. The athlete threw 25.12m and finished in eighth place.

Jéssica Giacomelli from São Paulo completed the 100m in the T54 class (wheelchair users) in 17.08 seconds – her best time of the season. However, she did not advance to the final. She finished 11th in the qualifying round.

Suzana Nahirnei from Santa Catarina finished fifth in the shot put in the F46 class (upper limb disability). Her best mark was 11.43m.

The last Brazilian to compete on Wednesday morning, Marcos Vinícius Oliveira from Espírito Santo ran the 400m in the T12 class (low vision) in 50s42 and did not advance to the final.

Clara Daniele from Rio Grande do Norte, Lorraine Aguiar from Espírito Santo and Viviane Ferreira Soares from Rio de Janeiro did not qualify for the final of the 100m T12 (low vision).
