Peru’s new foreign minister, Elmer Schialer, said that the position of his country’s government regarding the situation in Venezuela is that the problems must be “resolved by Venezuelans” and described the issue as “absolutely delicate.”
“This is an absolutely delicate issue. Our position, Peru’s, is a firm, democratic position in favor of Venezuela’s problems being resolved by Venezuelans,” Schialer said Tuesday in his first statements to the press after taking office, replacing Javier González-Olaechea.
The Peruvian foreign minister added that he would comment on the details of the Venezuelan situation “later.”
In recent weeks, former Foreign Minister González-Olaechea aligned himself with countries that do not recognize the electoral victory of President Nicolás Maduro and said that his “greatest challenge” was “to contribute to ending this horror.”
Boluarte made four changes to his cabinet on Tuesday in a brief ceremony held at the Government Palace in Lima, after the resignations of the outgoing officials were accepted.
In addition to Schialer, Ursula Desilú León, an expert in business law, was sworn in as Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism; engineer Durich Whittembury assumed the portfolio of Housing, Construction and Sanitation; and lawyer Fabricio Valencia, a specialist in the legal treatment of cultural heritage, was appointed as Minister of Culture.
