Pucallpa: Death toll rises to 6 after boat shipwreck in Ucayali River

So far, authorities have confirmed six deaths after the shipwreck of a boat that left the port of Pucallpa, located in the province of Coronel Portillo, Ucayali region, bound for the city of Atalaya, the day before.

The Peruvian Navy’s Corvette Captain, Jonathan Novoa, head of the Ucayali Harbor Master’s Office, confirmed the number of deaths. However, the victims have not yet been identified.

The boat was reported to have departed with 48 passengers, many of them teachers, at 2:30 p.m. yesterday and the tragedy occurred at 1:30 a.m. this Wednesday, September 4.

It is about the CR vessel, which operated on the Pucallpa-Atalaya route, which sank near the native community of Nueva Auquia and the Betijay native community, in the Tahuania district.

According to local residents, the shipwreck was caused by the decrease in the flow of the Ucayali River, which caused the ship to crash into submerged obstacles.

To date there is still no information on missing persons, but the Navy officer reported that he sent a speedboat to the area of ​​the shipwreck to provide assistance.

According to local media, the ship was carrying around 100 passengers, most of them teachers.
