Among the first products introduced by SOS Biotech are MarineSymbiotic, an agricultural biostimulant, and MarineBlossom
The country’s first blue biotechnology company, SOS Biotech, was launched and will operate in Azua.
This new organization is derived from SOS Carbon, an entity originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which has been working in the country and the Caribbean to address the problem of sargassum through its innovative technology, the Coastal Collection Module, designed to collect sargassum at sea before it invades the coasts and beaches.
SOS Biotech, under the direction of its CEO, Andrés Bisonó León, focuses on transforming environmental challenges into sustainable opportunities for the global market.
“Our goal at SOS Biotech is to introduce industrial and sustainable products derived from materials such as sargassum, which not only address ecological problems, but also boost the economic development of the country and the region,” said Bisonó León.
Among the first products introduced by SOS Biotech are MarineSymbiotic, an agricultural biostimulant, and MarineBlossom, a preservative for home flowers, both derived from marine algae.
MarineSymbiotic is an innovative product that takes advantage of the natural properties of sargassum to improve soil health, increase plant resistance to diseases and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, promoting more sustainable and productive agriculture.
In field application, MarineSymbiotic has demonstrated increases in production by an average of 43%. On the other hand, MarineBlossom is designed to prolong the life of fresh flowers in the home, keeping them alive and vibrant for longer. This product not only highlights the versatility of marine resources, but also promotes a conscious and sustainable use of them.
The organization proposes transforming agriculture towards more sustainable practices, reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers by more than 10% and improving yields by 15%.
Furthermore, it seeks to address the sargassum crisis in the Caribbean by minimising its environmental impact and taking advantage of its potential to generate innovative products at an industrial level.
The launch of SOS Biotech marks a milestone in SOS Carbon’s innovation journey, reaffirming its commitment to creating sustainable solutions that benefit both coastal communities and the environment.
