Words of Fernando Pereira, president of the Broad Front, in memory of Eduardo Bonomi:
El Bicho was a parliamentarian, Minister of Labor, Minister of the Interior, a political prisoner throughout the dictatorship, a social fighter, but above all a great comrade.
I was lucky enough to share several stages of life with him, among others when he became Minister of Labor and had the responsibility of launching collective bargaining, freedom of association and leveling the balance of labor relations.
He was definitely up to the task. We share a deep work representing Uruguay in ILO Conferences. In one of those conferences we talked a lot about the value of freedom and theater, he began to talk to me about the Roman theater with amazing depth and its importance with incredibly minute details.
I was very surprised and when I asked him why he knew so much, he replied very calmly that when he was in prison every once in a while they let him in a book and he had asked his mother to bring him the biggest book possible. As he found several volumes on the subject, he took them with him and read them all several times, to move his head and be lucid.
Most of the time, even in the worst conditions, theater helps us live freedom. A while ago Pacha Sánchez called me to tell me about Bicho, and he broke my soul, only he knows everything he wanted.
After some tears I decided that in a few days I will write about Bonomi’s successes, to vindicate the comrade, his actions and decisions for the country.
There are many things that move when a partner leaves us. Let’s try to transform that pain into rebellion to continue building a productive country with social justice. Don’t lose joy or the ability to dream.
